The Smith River Small Towns Business District Revitalization Project is off to a booming start!
Thanks to a generous donor, Henry County project administrators were able to move forward and coordinate with the Department of Historic Resources to begin replacing the roof at the Bassett Historic Train Depot.
And on April 18, 2016, Governor Terry McAuliffe announced a grant award of $500,000 from the Appalachian Region Commission, to be used for the renovation of the Bassett Historic Train Depot. This grant will be partnered with private funds enabling full restoration to this historic treasure.
Some of the next steps to be taken in Phase 1 of this project will include design work and discussions with façade property owners.
Partners of Smith River Small Towns recently shared more about the project with a booth exhibit at Historic Garden Week in the Bassett Historic Train Depot on April 27. Many members of the community and visitors from out of town were excited to see where and how the transformation of Bassett and Fieldale is coming about.
